While the T.R. Miller Tiger basketball team won last years Escambia County tournament on the court, forfeits by Escambia County gave Flomaton the win after the Canes beat Miller and suffered their only loss to Escambia County.
This year the Tigers should have no worries of losing their tournament championship as the Tigers went 3-0 in this past weekends tourney as they capped of the week with a 62-32 win over W.S. Neal Saturday.
With the win, the Tigers improved to 4-1 on the season and will host Monroe County Friday at home.
Monroeville is currently 10-2 on the season and ranked No. 6 in the state in the latest AHSAA basketball poll.
W.S. Neal fell to 0-3 in the tournament and 2-9 on the season.
With the tournament win and along with the results from last year's forfeits, this was T.R. Miller's first Escambia County tournament win since 2002.
After taking an early 6-2 lead over the Eagles, W.S. Neal cut the Tiger lead to 6-4 with 4:02 left in the first quarter after Kendrick Floyd's bucket.
That would be all the points W.S. Neal would get for the rest of the quarter and for 3:02 of the second quarter as T.R. Miller went on a 16-0 run to take a 18-4 first quarter lead and a 22-4 lead until Jeremy Nicholson ended the Miller scoring with 4:58 in the second quarter.
Six different Tigers scored in the span as the Tigers held the Eagles to only eight points in the first half while scoring 30 points to take a 30-8 lead at the half.
The Tigers continued to take control of the game as a David Payne dunk brought down the house with 4:11 left in the third as he gave the Tigers a 38-14 lead and held a 45-21 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was much of the same as the Tigers built a lead of 32 and never looked back as the Tigers defeated W.S. Neal 62-32 and took the county tournament title.
Four Tigers scored in double digits in the win as all tournament team members Brandon Andrews had 13, Corey Cunningham finished with 17, and Teras Fountain had 10. David Payne also added 10 for the Tigers.
Jeremy Alexander was the leading scorer for the Eagles with 10 as Jeremy Nicholson landed eight points for the Eagles and a spot on the all tournament team.
W.S. Neal will be back in action Friday when they travel to Pleasant Home.
