Nearly half of those people answering a recent Brewton Standard poll indicated their resolutions for the New Year included getting more exercise and losing weight in 2008. Of those who responded, 12 percent say quitting smoking is in their plan for the coming year.
Increasing activity through exercise should be a goal for everyone according to Jason Snider, who serves as the sports and aquatics director at the Greater Brewton Area YMCA.
Although the New Year is a time for making resolutions, Carl McInnish, youth director at First Presbyterian Church, said he has set a goal to work out more often.
Those who are making a resolution to stop smoking have an opportunity to receive some assistance in meeting that goal. Tina Findley, tobacco control coordinator for the Escambia County Health Department said help is available through the department as well as the Alabama Department of Public Health.
The Quitline number is 1-800-Quit-Now.
For those interested in joining the local YMCA for classes and use of equipment, a special offer is being made for the New Year.
Brewton YMCA hours are 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday. Saturday hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information concerning the YMCA call 867-9622.
