As we have ended the year and 2007 and we are now in the second day of the new year of 2008, I want first to wish everyone a Happy New Year.
With 2008 now upon us, I thought that we could look at what the 2008 Brewton Standard sports season will feature.
Starting on Thursday and Friday both area basketball teams will start area play. T.R. Miller will open up their area schedule when they travel to Hillcrest on Thursday, and W.S. Neal will travel to Andalusia on Friday.
T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal are in the same basketball area along with Hillcrest and Andalusia. These games are very important to both schools and they will play each other on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at T.R. Miller and again on Jan. 18 at W.S. Neal.
JDCC's basketball schedule continues until Feb. 28, as the Warhawks will begin conference games again. Right now the Warhawks are 3-7 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
In a month, the JDCC Warhawks will open up their baseball schedule with a home game on Feb. 1 against Bevill Fayette at 1 p.m.
The Warhawks' next two games are also at home before they hit a three-game round schedule.
The JDCC Lady Warhawks' softball season will begin on Feb. 7 at home with a doubleheader against Central Alabama Community College.
Starting in late January and early February, our area high school baseball teams will begin practice. According to the 2008 spring sports book, baseball teams in the state can begin practice on Jan. 28. Softball teams can begin practice on this date also.
Tennis, golf and outdoor track teams will also begin their schedules during these times and will play their schedules as the school year finishes.
Toward the end of the school year and during summer months, we will begin Little League games and Babe Ruth games.
As the 2008-2009 school year begins, T.R. Miller will finds itself in 3A again as W.S. Neal remains in 4A.
Football season and volleyball season get underway and basketball season will take us through the end of the year like we are in now.
Again, I hope all had a safe and a Happy New Year and that the year 2008 will be great.
I wish all area teams the best of luck this week and until Sunday when we meet again, God bless.
