Voting important in 2008

As the new year begins, we have much to look forward to in 2008, from opportunities in the economy to community service.
But one of the most important things that will dominate the year are elections - from the presidential race to municipal voting.
Alabamians will kick off the political year by voting in the presidential preference primary on Feb. 5. The state was hoping to get in on some of the early attention in the races by scheduling its primary early - but so far, our nine electoral votes have not attracted a lot of attention.
That lack of attention might make it seem less important to vote in the Feb. 5 primary, but the choice is still very important. Whether it's one electoral vote or 20, our state does have influence in who is chosen as the nominee for each party, and we should all take time that day to cast our votes.
In June, we'll have some county offices up for election, and in August city officials will be on the ballot. It's too early to tell who will be up for votes, but it's not too late if you are considering running for office yourself. We don't necessarily want to see any current official lose his or her seat, but it's always good in a democracy to have a lot of choices for local elections.
In November, of course, we'll be back at the polls to choose a president. At this stage in the game, who that person will be is as far from a foregone conclusion as you can get. It will be a busy year for candidates - and for voters trying to determine who is the best person to lead the nation.
We hope that everyone will take the time to register to vote and cast their ballots on all election days. It is our right and responsibility as citizens to take part in the political process.
