Atmore native Jim Corman was thrilled to hear that presidential candidate Mike Huckabee fared so well in the Iowa Caucus Thursday night.
A large part of Corman's joy came from the fact that he is seeking election as a delegate for Huckabee at the Republican National Convention.
Corman said he originally looked into supporting Huckabee because of a push from his daughter, Ellen.
Corman said because of his daughter's persuasion, he started researching Huckabee's views and was pleased with what he read and heard.
According to Corman, being a delegate for a presidential candidate is something he felt obligated to do.
Corman will know if he has been elected as a delegate after the primaries, depending on the amount of votes Huckabee gets. Corman is running against one other individual, Spencer Collier.
If Corman is voted as a delegate for Huckabee and if Huckabee makes it through the primary elections, Corman will have the opportunity to network at the RNC.
The convention will be held Sept. 1-4 in Minneapolis.
The Iowa caucus came into play Thursday night when Huckabee won more votes than any other Republican candidate. Barack Obama won the Democratic caucus.
Huckabee defeated former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson and U.S. Sen. John McCain, among others.
The Iowa caucus is the first major electoral activity of the nominating process for the president of the United States.
Because Huckabee won the Iowa caucus, Corman is excited but said he also knows that any secrets Huckabee may have are going to surface because of the newfound spotlight.
Despite the “dirt” that may be thrown, Corman believes Huckabee has a friend in Alabama voters.
Alabama will hold its presidential primary Feb. 5, along with a number of other states.
This will be the opportunity to vote for Corman.
Corman has had his hands in many of Atmore's businesses and projects, including Rivercane and Touch1, and he and his family have recently moved to the Auburn area.
