Warhawks take two of three, fall in OT 96-93

Three games in five days with two wins by a combined six points and an overtime loss to “top team in the southern conference” by three points: That is what the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawks did to improve their record to 5-10 and 2-2 in conference play this week.
The Warhawks took two of three games as they defeated Chattahoochee Valley 96-92 Thursday night in Phenix City, defeated Wallace State of Selma Saturday night at home 85-83 and lost an overtime battle with Alabama Southern at home Monday night 96-93.
JDCC 93, Alabama Southern 96 OT
In a hard fought game by both teams that saw JDCC take a 12-point lead and never trail by as many as six points and was tied at 80-80 at the end of regulation ended up going in the other teams favor as JDCC lost an overtime decision to Alabama Southern Monday night at home, 96-93.
JDCC opened the game and took a 10-6 lead, but ASCC went on a 6-0 run to take a 12-10 lead on a dunk with 15:50 left in the opening half.
After tying the game at 12-12 with 14:45 when leading scorer Donald Smith connected for the Warhawks, JDCC took control of the game and held a 39-27 lead after a 7-0 run at the 3:25 mark.
ASCC then closed the gap to six as JDCC held a 41-35 lead at the half.
JDCC opened the second half of play taking a 47-36 lead before the visiting Eagles went on a 9-0 run to close the lead to 47-45 with 15:46 left in the game.
After falling behind 51-49, JDCC went on an 8-0 run to take a 57-51 lead with 11:10 left in the game.
After closing the lead, the game stayed close throughout the rest of the half and was tied at 80-80 at the end of regulation.
In the five minute overtime period, ASCC outscored the Warhawks 16-13 in the period as they built a 94-88 lead with 34 seconds left as JDCC cut the lead to 94-90 with 27.9 second left.
Forced to foul, ASCC connected on one of two free throws to take a 95-90 lead before Damien Jackson connected for a 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds to cut the lead to 95-93.
The Warhawks fouled again and ASCC hit one of two free throws with .6 seconds left as a desperation shot for the Warhawks failed and ASCC won 96-93.
Donald Smith led the Warhawks with 26 points as three other Warhawks scored in double figures.
Damien Jackson finished with 18 points as Justin Owens had 15 and Quintereal Kelley had 14.
The Warhawks shot 17-of-22 from the free throw line and shot 12 3-pointers in the game.
JDCC 96, Chatt. Valley 92
The Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawks improved their record to 4-9 Thursday night and most importantly 1-1 in conference play as they defeated Chattahoochee Valley of Phenix City 96-92.
After trailing 48-44 at the end of the first half, the Warhawks returned the favor in the second half as they scored 52 points while holding Chattahoochee Valley to 44 to take the four-point win.
Quintereal Kelley was the leading scorer in the game for the Warhawks as he had 33 points in the win. The Warhawks had three other players in double figures as Brewton's Damien Jackson finished with 17 and Donald Smith and Will Dupont each finished with 14 points.
JDCC 85,
Wallace State Selma 83
The JDCC Warhawks picked up their second straight win and a conference win Saturday night at home when they defeated Wallace State of Selma 85-83.
With the win, the Warhawks improved to 5-9 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.
After being outscored 40-29 in the first half, the Warhawks turned it around in the second half of play outscoring Wallace 56-43 to take the two-point win.
Donald Smith led the Warhawks with 33 points and Damien Jackson added double figures with 11 points.
It was the second consecutive game a Warhawk has scored 33 points as Quintereal Kelley led with 33 in the Warhaws win over Chattahoochee Valley.
Ricco McMillon and Norman Griffin led with five rebounds each.
The Warhawks shot 86 percent from the free throw line.
