BOE members honored in Atmore

Escambia County Board of Education members had a special treat when they showed up to their meeting at A.C. Moore Elementary School Thursday afternoon.
January is School Board Recognition Month and area principals, faculty, staff and students worked hard to put on a show for board members.
A.C. Moore Elementary School principal David Nolin and his staff and students showed their appreciation for all the board members with a picture show.
Escambia County Middle School principal Zickeyous Byrd and Huxford Elementary School principal Donna Silcox and their students worked with A.C. Moore students to perform a trivia game for the board members.
Each student gave clues about who they were and the audience had to guess from the clues which board member the student was imitating.
After the fun and games, the board meeting went on as usual with chief school finance officer Julie Madden providing a monthly financial statement.
According to Madden, the school district's October fund balance came to $6.9 million, the November fund balance totaled $7 million and the December fund balance was $8.1 million.
Madden said she is proud of the fund balance, especially since there is a possibility that the state will lower the amount of funds received next year.
Hines said the state will be lowering the budget. However, county residents voted to renew the tax for the school system during the summer, which means the loss will not take an enormous financial toll.
