With the temperatures changing the past couple of days, that means that one thing is growing near: Baseball season.
Not just high school season and college, Major League Baseball is getting closer to beginning.
Last Friday, spring training began for most major league teams and with spring training coming there is two familiar faces coming back to the Atlanta Braves this season in Tom Glavine and Javy Lopez.
Most people in this part of the state and country probably associate themselves as Atlanta Braves baseball fans.
Growing up and even in my high schools days, it was always Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, and Greg Maddux with the Braves.
The past three or four years, two of those names have been missing from Braves' rosters. This year, while one still remains with another team, two of the three are back as Glavine has been reunited with the Braves after a stint with the Mets.
While two “old” Braves are back, the catcher that caught them has also made his way back to Atlanta after having a not-so-great career after leaving.
With the return of these guys back to the Braves, I look for winning ways to return back to Atlanta. Prior to last season, the Braves had won a record 14 N.L. East titles before falling last year to the Mets and Phillies.
No, two people returning do not make the team, but they sure won't hurt it either.
Lopez and Glavine both seem happy to be back in Atlanta according to quotes I have read since rejoining the team and beginning spring drills last week.
Glavine, whose family still lived in Atlanta after being with the Mets, said that if the Braves did not pick him up after last season that he would have retired.
Lopez, who calls himself a backup-slash coach, also seemed delighted to be back.
I for one am excited to have them back in Atlanta.
On a different note, if anyone is interested in joining our fantasy baseball league through Yahoo! Sports, they are more than welcome to do it. Twenty people in the league is max and we already have three people.
My brother-in-law usually sets up the group and this is about our fourth year doing it. All you have to do is go to www.yahoo.com and click sports. From there click fantasy and then fantasy baseball 08. Log in with your yahoo address and click join league. Our league is Brewtonville and the ID No. is 58852 and the password is a1b2c3.
From there, set up your team name and logo and colors and you should be set.
It should let you know with a confirmation email what to do after that, but you should be ready to go and the season begins March 30 with the majority of games beginning on March 31.
If you have any questions, just email me.
I want to wish all area teams the best of luck in area games this week and wish the T.R. Miller Lady Tigers good luck in Troy at the South regional.
Until Sunday when we meet again, God bless.
