The Heroes of the American Red Cross are giving area residents an opportunity to break out of the ordinary while helping their fellow man.
A campaign to raise $25,000 to help with disaster relief through the East Escambia Chapter of American Red Cross will continue through March 12. Activities are planned throughout the campaign period to allow area residents to lend a helping hand financially and enjoying some interesting events.
The first big event of the campaign will be a special four-man scramble golf tournament held at the Country Club of Brewton Saturday. Coordinating the event is John Downing, who is hoping for a large number of participants.
The entry fee is $75 per player, or $300 per team, Downing said.
Those interested in signing up for the tournament or sponsor tee boxes should call 867-3408 or 867-4100.
If golf isn't quite your cup of tea, you may want to check out Project Runway Red Cross, showing some of the latest fashions March 13 at noon at The Ritz downtown.
Special waitresses will also be on hand to help serve the meal and work for tips, Smith said.
Tickets for the event are $20 each and include lunch, the show as well as a chance at special giveaways and door prizes, Smith said.
Assisting in coordinating the event are Sandy English and Tara Moore. Those interested in purchasing advance tickets or making a reservation for an entire table may contact any of the coordinators. Smith may be contacted at Shades of Gray. English may be reached at English Realty, and Moore may be contacted at Weaver's Fine Apparel.
In anticipation of the upcoming Easter holiday, the youth department at First United Methodist Church is busy creating interesting Easter baskets for purchase.
Some area merchants are making arrangements for a portion of special purchases to go directly to the Red Cross.
Breckenridge's next-door neighbor, Carol Graves, is also getting in on the sales event as well.
With pollen beginning to make an appearance, a car wash may be crossing your mind. Webb's Auto Sales can help you with that chore while you help the Red Cross.
Cost for washing cars is $20, while trucks and SUVs will pay $30. Pick-up and delivery is available. For reservations, call 809-8413.
Schools are also getting in on the fund-raising effort by holding competitions for collecting the most donations.
T.R. Miller High School students are getting in on some competition of their own, said school counselor Becky Edge. “Our students will be participating by raising money to benefit Red Cross during the campaign,” Edge said. “Students will be putting up fliers and collecting funds. Winners will get a special 20 minute class break to reward their efforts.”
For those businesses and organizations not holding special events, donation canisters have been placed throughout the area by coordinator Melanie McGougin.
Any business wishing to offer space for a canister can contact McGougin at 867-8686.
For additional information concerning the fund raising campaign or to make a donation directly to the local Red Cross chapter, call 867-3426 or mail tax-deductible contributions to 1014 Douglas Ave., Brewton, AL 36426.
