Dr. Antonio Rafael Ballagas, 96, died Monday, March 17, 2008, at a local nursing facility after an extended illness. He was a native of Camaguey, Cuba, and a long time resident of Milledgeville, Ga., before moving to Jay. He was a 1942 graduate of the University of Havana School of Medicine where he received his medical degree. He was a retired anesthesiologist and was of the Catholic faith.
He is survived by two sons, Dr. Antonio J. Ballagas of Jay and Rafael (Linda) Ballagas of Conyers, Ga.; a daughter, Ana Maria Hendrix of Jefferson City, Mo.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held by the family at a later time. Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
