Lacie Harris McCall, 24, and her 18-month-old son Eddie Whidden McCall are recovering in a Pensacola, Fla., hospital following a four-wheeler accident Saturday on River Road in the Riverview community.
Harris's daughter Lacie and grandson Whidden were taken by Lifeflight from the scene to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Escambia County Sheriff Chief Deputy John Gleaton said.
Lacie was driving a 1991 Kawasaki four-wheeler with Whidden as a passenger, Alabama State Trooper officials said.
Trooper Jimmy Dean responded to the accident after the victims had been taken from the scene.
Harris said Whidden received multiple injuries in the accident and doctors are evaluating his condition.
Whidden sustained multiple skull fractures and at least one vertebra fracture in the accident, Harris said.
Harris said her daughter also sustained several injuries in the accident.
Lacie's spleen was also damaged in the accident; however, doctors said she is stable enough that no surgery would be necessary.
The condition of Whidden is more serious, but the family remains hopeful for his recovery, Harris said.
Good Samaritans could be responsible for saving the lives of the two victims, Harris said.
Lacie may spend several weeks in the hospital, while Whidden may be facing a much longer stay in the hospital as a result of his injuries, Harris said.
