Behind an efficient pitching performance by Caleb Winton, coupled by several stellar defensive plays from his teammates, the Blue Jays edged the Mets in the season-finale for both teams Thursday night.
Winton, in his first pitching start of the season, struck out five and gave up just two hits in holding the Mets scoreless through two innings of his four-plus innings of work. He was aided defensively by brother Joshua Winton at shortstop, Cole Blackmon at catcher and a great running catch in left field by Austin Cain.
Offensively, the Jays were led by Ethan Tyree, who was 3-for-3 with a triple and a shot off the left-field fence for an inside-the-park home run. Tyree scored twice and had three RBIs. Blackmon contributed a pair of hits and scored twice for the Jays.
Austin Holmes had an equally impressive pitching performance for the Mets in his only start of the season. Holmes struck out seven in three innings of work, before leaving down just 4-2.
After Tyree's home run made it 7-2, Caleb Winton gave way in the fifth to relief help after giving up consecutive singles to Jarred Cooper, Austin Holmes and Phillip Norsworthy. All three eventually scored. After Stokes Jennings drew a walk and scored to cut the lead to 7-6 with the tying run on first and no outs, the Jays brought Andrew Brown to the mound facing a 2-0 count. Blackmon fielded a bunt and threw to first base for the first out – allowing Alex Daughtery to advance to second. A few pitches later, Daughtery would move to third on a passed ball.
The Jays finally put the win away when Joshua Winton recorded the second out on a fly ball just on the outfield grass, before Brown stranded the runner at third with a strikeout to end the game.
