Prepare now for hurricanes

This week marks the official beginning of the 2008 hurricane season, expected to produce 16 named storms, including six to nine hurricanes and two to five major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale), according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center.
This early in the storm season, it's easy to think of those predictions as, like the past two years, higher than the actual number of storms, and events that won't happen until August or September.
But being complacent about storm possibilities can be dangerous, and as those who have living along the Gulf Coast for decades can tell you, storms can begin rolling in as early as July.
So it pays to plan ahead, to think about the supplies you would need if the power were out for a few days, or if your water supply were cut off.
