Another sports shirt sells for big bucks

How much would you pay for a nice dress shirt? How about if the nice dress shirt was stained with red Gatorade? What if the shirt had your teams coach's autograph and star player and they just won the NBA championship?
Well, for $55,000 an anonymous bidder did just that as he bought Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers shirt that was worn when the Celtics defeated the Los Angles Lakers a couple weeks ago to win their first NBA championship in 22 years.
Not only did the bidder get the Gatorade stained shirt with the autographs, but also he got the Gatorade bucket from which the Gatorade came to make the stains on the shirt.
But for all good purposes, the funds were from a charity auction and will go to the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation.
The foundation said Tuesday the high bid of $35,000 came from an anonymous bidder and that Gatorade and a second anonymous donor each pledged $10,000 to bring the total to $55,000.
Is this the year of shirts and jerseys to be auctioned off for big money? If you remember, a couple months or so ago, I wrote about the Boston Red Sox jersey of David Ortiz that was buried in the new New York Yankee stadium by a Red Sox fan to “curse” the Yankees. Well after word leaked, the Yankees had the jersey dug up and jack hammered out of the stadium.
That jersey would later sell for over $175,000.
That is $230,000 worth of money for the shirt and jersey combined.
I am a huge sports fan, but I just don't see paying that much money for a Gatorade soaked dress shirt and a jack hammered jersey, even if it is for charity.
Both teams are from Boston so I guess Bostonians just love their teams a whole lot. I guess so because they can probably boast of being Title Town USA as of right now.
The Red Sox have won two World Series titles as of recent and the Celtics now have a title to boast of their own.
The Patriots have been great as of late in football and had a perfect season this year up until the Super Bowl.
If the Patriots would have won the Super Bowl, that would have been titles for the Boston area in baseball, football, and basketball from this season.
Wow! That would have been a great accomplishment, but two out of three isn't bad I guess.
Well, I want to wish all our area all-star teams the best of luck as they start tournament play here soon.
Our 14-year-old Babe Ruth teams will begin play on Thursday, July 3 in Monroeville at 6 p.m.
Both our 9-and 10-year-olds began on Saturday in East Brewton.
Escambia County Green will play today a 6 p.m. and the winner of the Escambia County Gold team and Brewton game from Saturday will play at 4 p.m. today while the loser will play at 8 p.m.
For the 10-and-11-year-old teams, their tournament will begin on Tuesday at either 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. in East Brewton.
For our 11-and 12-year-old teams, play will begin on Saturday, July 5 in Brewton. Brewton will not play until Sunday at 8 p.m. due to an opening round bye.
Escambia County will play Saturday at 8 p.m.
Come out to the ball fields and support your favorite player and team.
Until Wednesday when we meet again here or out in the world of sports or on the ball fields, God bless.
