Mr. James W. Smith, 70, died Monday, July 21, 2008, at a local hospital. He was a native of Brewton and a resident of Atmore for the past 35 years. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, an employee at McDeremett Oil Company for 33 years and attended the Atmore Nazarene Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Steely and Floria Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Merrell Smith of Atmore; two sons, Joey Wayne Smith of Mobile and Dennis James Smith of Brewton; three daughters, Betty Singleton of Martinville, Judy Blackburn of Atmore, and Donnie Lynn Goree of Satsuma; a brother, Jim Smith of Hanford, Calif.; a sister, Eddie Mae Towey of Hanford; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 24, at 2 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Ed McMillan officiating. Burial followed at Canoe Freewill Cemetery with Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were Ray Chavers, Leon Chavers, Curtis Chavers, Chris Singleton, John Chavers and Lance Blackburn.
