Learn about candidates

As we prepare for the municipal elections in Brewton and East Brewton on Aug. 26, we've been publishing stories in each issue about each city council race, and we'll do the same for the mayor's race in East Brewton.
We've asked each candidate three simple questions: What are the most important issues facing the city; why are you best-suited for the office; and what would you do to help the city.
The candidates' answers have been varied, but most are concerned about schools - especially the building of a new middle school in Brewton; revenue - especially in light of the need to raise taxes in East Brewton; and economic development - especially as we hope to capitalize on the success in Mobile County with ThyssenKrupp, a new steel mill to be built there.
We hope these stories have been illuminating for voters, but we know that everyone has their own special issues and concerns they want to hear about.
The Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a candidates' coffee next Tuesday that can help voters get more acquainted with those running for office.
The Coffee and the Candidates program will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the ATN building on the Jefferson Davis Community College campus.
All of the municipal and county candidates have been invited to attend.
East Brewton and local county candidates will speak from 7:30 to 8:15, and Brewton and local county candidates will speak from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. A break in between will allow voters to ask their own questions and meet candidates.
Refreshments and breakfast items will be available.
We hope that everyone will take time to attend and meet the candidates in their districts.
This is an important time for our community, and learning as much as we can about the candidates will help all of us.
