A “Coffee and the Candidates” forum sponsored by the Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce drew candidates and voters to focus on the important issues in this year's municipal, county commission and school district races.
Many of the candidates on the ballot gave their time to introduce themselves, share some coffee and donuts and answer questions from voters.
The chamber should be commended for hosting the event, along with sponsors Colonial Bank, Bank of Brewton, First Exchange Bank and BankTrust. Bakies, Bee Sweet Bakery and Wilkinson's of Norwich - all local companies - provided the refreshments.
This was a great opportunity for voters to learn more about the candidates and consider the issues in this year's campaign.
While the turnout might not have been huge, we hope this is the kind of event that the chamber will consider hosting in the future.
We all need to remember how important this year's elections are. Not only do we have a presidential race on the ballot in November along with the county commission and county school board races, we also have contested races in every Brewton and East Brewton council race on Aug. 26, along with the East Brewton mayor's race.
We hope that voters will continue to learn more about the candidates as election day approaches, and we expect to see everyone at the polls on Aug. 26 and on Nov. 4.
