Ms. Bonnie E. Barnes, 81, of Brookwood Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at a local hospital after an extended illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Brewton and a member of First Baptist Church of Brewton. She attended The South Carolina Bankers Trust School and the National Graduate Trust School. She began her banking career in 1947 and worked in various departments of the bank. She witnessed the merger of Citizens-Farmers and Merchants Bank which would later become First National Bank and BankTrust. She was recognized and honored by her peers in 1989 when the National Association of Bank Women elected her into the Alabama Hall of Fame. She held positions of vice president, trust officer, secretary to the board of directors. She retired in 1989 with 42 years of service. She was preceded in death by a special friend, Clarence Turnipseed; and other friends and relatives.
She is survived by two nephews, Michael O. (Sharon) McCurdy of Riverview and R. Patrick McCurdy of Tallahassee; a niece, Margaret E. (David) Alsobrooks of Greensboro, N.C.; two great-nephews, Gregory McCurdy and Lance McCurdy; one great-neice, Leigh Alsobrooks; special friends, Bea Worthington, Ethelene Harold and Annie Margaret Howell; caregivers and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 11 a.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. John Finklea officiating. Burial followed at Union Cemetery with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.
