Mr. Ray Madison Sherer, 85, of Bonita Avenue, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, in a Milton medical facility after a brief illness. He was a native of Flat Creek in Walker County and a long-time resident of Brewton. He was a member of the Brewton Church of Christ, a U.S. Army veteran and owned and operated Sherer Brothers store for 40 years. He had been a member of the Brewton City Council, water board, served as mayor pro-tem and mayor of Brewton.
He is survived by his wife, Kate Adkisson Sherer of Brewton; five sons, Ray (Emily) Sherer Jr. of Montgomery, Brown (Chris) Sherer of Fairhope, John (Karen) Sherer of Brewton, Hayes (Rachael) Sherer of Spanish Fort, and Jackson (Jane) Sherer of Cape Coral, Fla.; one daughter, Melane (Johnnie) Byrd of Plant City, Fla.; a stepson, Robert (Leah) Hefferman of Pensacola Beach, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Jane (Alex) McDowell of Brewton and Anne (Charles) Schaeffer of Eufaula, and 20 grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. at Union Cemetery with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.
