The Brewton Civic League met Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, for its first meeting of the 2008-2009 season.
The purpose of the League is now, as it has always been, betterment of the town through community service.
At this first meeting of the year, it was decided by League members to participate in the community wide Alzheimer's Walk to take place at the YMCA on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 9 a.m.
League members will walk in memory and in honor of Mrs. Dement Hays, a life member of the Brewton Civic League. She, who passed away earlier this year, was instrumental in helping to shape the Alzheimer's Caregivers Support Group affiliated with the Area on Aging.
Other projects of interest to the League are the annual Nursing Scholarship, and projects related to girl scouts.
The League also donates time and money to provide Christmas joy to the elderly, the needy and dependent children of Escambia County.
The slate of officers for 2008-2009 are: Voncille Fountain - president; Beverly Wade - first vice president; Cindy Taylor - second vice president; Jackie Gay - recording secretary; Peggy Kelly - treasurer; Sherry Riggs - corresponding secretary; and Carol Fountain - parlimentarian.
