Mr. Marvin Lewis Bailey, 86, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at his son's residence in the Roberts community. He was a native of Rockingham, N.C., and had been a resident of the Brewton area since 1965. He retired after 30 years of service from the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve, seeing action in World War II and the Korean Conflict. During World War II, his ship, the USS Essex, was presented the presidential unit citation for extraordinary heroism in action.
He is survived by three sons, Joseph Daniel Bailey of the Roberts community, Phillip Anthony Bailey of Birmingham, and Martin L. Bailey of Milton, Fla.; a daughter, Gretchen Mae Brown of Mount Olive; a brother, Raymond Bailey of Kannapolis, N.C.; two sisters, Maltie Chandler and Pearlie James, both of Kannapolis; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Craver's Funeral Home with the Rev. John Kemp officiating. Burial followed at Weaver Cemetery with military honors and Craver's Funeral Home directing.
