The summer of 2008 will be remembered as a time of extreme academic challenge and humbling personal growth, said Heather Robbins, a student nurse from Jefferson Davis Community College Student Nursing Association.
Amid the challenges of being a wife, mother of three and a full-time nursing student, Robbins was privileged to serve as student coordinator of The Mommy Store for JDCC Nursing Association's Summer Community Project promoting the community efforts of Sav-A-Life Pregnancy Resource Centers in Brewton and Atmore, Alabama.
As student coordinator of The Mommy Store, Robbins said she has gained valuable insight into the importance of volunteerism and community involvement.
Through the project, students and faculty of the JDCC Student Nursing Association in partnership with Director of Client Services Jessica Fountain RN, BSN of Sav-A-Life worked to promote needs awareness of the two local chapters.
In addition to volunteering their time in teaching a variety of classes intended to prepare new mothers for the challenges of parenting, students of JDCC also rallied together to collect more than 300 articles of clothing, baby bottles, infant formula, diapers and other much needed supplies.
Every donation collected will directly benefit those being served through the programs of Sav-A-Life.
Sav-A-Life Pregnancy Resource Center is a not-for-profit community-based organization specializing in Individual and Family Social Services.
