Palenque Mexican Restaurant, located in Douglas Square, has been open for less than a year, but it has some of the best food in town.
Palenque “Pa-lin-kes”, which means Rodeo in Mexica, is all about having a good time.
The restaurant is owned and managed by Ramon Medrano and his expertise comes from working in his uncle's restaurant.
Medrano comes to Brewton from Houston, Texas, where Mexican food is very popular.
Medrano said the cooks work to make all of the dishes good no matter which way the customer likes it.
Although Mexican food is the focus of the restaurant, other items on the menu provide options for those who prefer something a little north of the border.
The restaurant is open seven days a week. Monday through Thursday they are open from 11 a.m. until 9:30 p.m.; on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m.; and on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m.
The restaurant has a special menu for the youngsters.
Chicken fingers, cheesebugers, hot dogs and smaller portions of some of the adult dishes can be ordered for the smaller diners.
Menu items include speciality dishes as well as good starters to any meal.
There are appetizers, dips, nachos, wings and chicken fingers to either whet the appetite or make a meal.
Meals at Palenque don't end with the entree. The restaurant serves a variety of desserts that will put a sweet end to a authentic Mexican meal.
Among the items on the dessert menu is the sopapilla. The sweet-crucnhy treat is a traditional Mexican meal-ender.
Also featured ont he dessert menu are items such as flan and fried ice cream. More American inspired desserts such as cheese cake and Chimicheese cake finish out the selections.
Madrano said the meals at Palenque are as varied as the customers who come in for a meal. Combos, of course, are available, but plated dinners can be made up of items unique to the tastes of any customer.
