Help our community fill needs

Fortunes are falling on Wall Street, and here at home many of us are watching retirement accounts and college funds and savings suffer, too.
But for many people, even in our community, suffering isn't just about not having a solid financial footing for the future. It's about not having dinner tomorrow.
Needs are rising fast. Area agencies that serve those in need have been seeing an increase in requests. Even though gas prices have, thankfully, fallen, other costs remain high, and the national economy is still slowing.
We are a generous community, and many of us are lucky enough to be financially stable even in tough times across the country. We have jobs, we have food on the table, and we will have a little left over to have a merry Christmas.
But that leaves others in our community who do need a little help to get through some difficult times. Maybe it's just a few groceries or help with the light bill so that a family can make it through the month. Maybe it's the little everyday necessities that have been harder for seniors to afford on a fixed income. Maybe it's some toys to help make Christmas merrier for children.
As we approach this holiday season, there are more ways to give, in addition to more people who need to receive. Here are just a few:
