Local middle school teams split in basketball Monday

The Brewton Middle School Tigers and the W.S. Neal Middle School Eagles split a boys and girls basketball Monday night in Brewton.
The W.S. Neal Lady Eagles defeated Brewton 16-9, and the Brewton boys defeated W.S. Neal 20-12. With the win, the Lady Eagles improved to 2-0 on the season while the Brewton Lady Tigers dropped to 0-2. The Brewton Middle School Tigers improved to 1-1 on the year and W.S. Neal dropped to 0-2.
In the girls game on Monday, Shapassion Lane led the Lady Eagles with 7 points, and Arianna Jones had 6 to help lead the Lady Eagles in the win.
The Eagles held Brewton scoreless in the first and third quarters en route to holding a 6-2 halftime lead.
Jasmine Montgomery led the Lady Tigers with 8 points in the loss.
After a scoreless 5:48 seconds to start the game, Lane nailed a three-pointer for the Lady Eagles to give W.S. Neal a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.
Montgomery got the Lady Tigers on the board at the 5:45 mark as she cut the lead to 3-2. Tiana Smith added a free throw and Coutrney Emmons added a basket to give W.S. Neal a 6-2 halftime lead.
Jones totaled six points in the final two quarters of play and Lane added four as W.S. Neal won 16-9. Montgomery had six of the Lady Tigers sevn total points in the second half of play.
In the boys game, Caleb Hubbard led the Brewton boys with 11 of the Tigers 20 points as they picked up their first win of the season.
The Tigers held a 4-2 lead after the first quarter and held a 9-7 lead at the half.
Brewton then outscored W.S. Neal 11-5 over the final two quarters to claim the win 20-12.
Marquese Banks led W.S. Neal with 6 points in the loss.
In a previous game for the Eagles, the W.S. Neal Lady Eagles picked up their first win of the season with a 14-13, one-point win over Escambia County Middle School.
Jones led W.S. Neal with 7 points in the win.
After trailing, 9-5 after three quarters of play, W.S. Neal scored nine points in the fourth quarter and held Escambia County to four points in the quarter to claim the 14-13 win.
In boy's action, W.S. Neal fell to 0-1 when they suffered a 36-22 loss to W.S. Neal.
Banks led W.S. Neal with 8 points followed by five from Trevor Burns.
Escambia County led 6-1 after the first quarter and 17-13 at the half. From there, W.S. Neal was outscored 19-9 as Escambia County won 36-23.
Both teams will be back in action on Thursday.
Brewton Middle School will take on Jay Middle School at home at 5 p.m. The game will be held at T.R. Miller gymnasium.
W.S. Neal will take on Escambia County Middle School again at home with games beginning at 4 p.m. at W.S. Neal Middle School.
Boys games will begin after the conclusion of the girls games.
