Mrs. Lucy Nell Simpkins Lewis, 69, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008. She was a native of Mexia and a former resident of Clausell, before moving to Brewton in 1959. She graduated from the Bethlehem Industrial Academy and attended Alabama A &M College in Normal. She worked at Southern Normal High School, Kate's Beauty Shop, Maldon's Beauty Shop and Brewton Headstart Program. After her retirement, she worked with the Success by Six Program sponsored by Auburn University. She was an active member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, serving in several capacities.
She was preceded in death by her father, Otis Simpkins; a sister, Rose Lee Autrey; sisters-in-law, Frances Lewis and Nettie Werline; her brothers-in-law, Thomas Lewis Jr., Charlie Lewis, and Robert Haley.
She is survived by her mother, DeEther Simpkins; her husband of 47 years, Albert Lewis; her daughter, Nelda Alexis Lewis (Lamonde) Russell of Helena; her sons, Eric Scott Lewis, Mitchell Lance Lewis and Forrest Greg Lewis, all of Brewton; grandchildren, Gabriel Charles Russell and Haley Charlise Russell of Helena; her sisters Relia Mae Lee and Bessie Ann Johnson; her brother, Otis Simpkins Jr.; her sisters-in-law, Sadie Jackson, Jimmie Lee Miller, Ella Young, Lillian Jasper Christine Crewell, Witha Mae Lewis and Patricia Simpkins; her brothers-in-law, Samuel (Rose) Lewis, Joe Autrey Philip Lee and Trevor Johnson Sr.; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 11 a.m. at Saint Mart Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Moses Atwood officiating. Burial followed at Oak Grove Cemetery with Presley-Fluker Funeral Home directing.
