The Brewton Public Library will host the author John Appleyard as he speaks about his latest book, “The History of Brewton and East Brewton,” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Appleyard is not new to the business of writing. He has written 110 books, many on local, family and corporate histories. He is, as he describes himself, “a yankee who was transplanted in the south and took roots.”
He is a native of Chicago and attended the Northwestern University, Oxford University in England, and the University of Delaware, where he earned a bachelor's degree. He entered the business world and in 1950 moved to Pensacola, Fla. His work in advertising began in 1957 when he entered the firm of Justin Weddell and Associates. He founded his own advertising firm, the John Appleyard Agency,in 1959 and after 32 years he retired from active work in 1992.
As an avid historian, Appleyard, has turned his creative mind to writing. Besides his other many books, he is the author of The T.R. Miller Mill Company, Inc. Story which was printed in 1997.
He has now authored the latest book about Brewton and East Brewton and its historical roots. Local historians lined up at a recent meeting of the Escambia County Historical Society to get their first look at the book and purchase the first to come off the press. The public will get its chance to view the book on Tuesday at the Brewton Public Library.
