Employees at Brewton's Georgia-Pacific facility will be getting some unexpected days off during the holidays when the mill turns off the lights and locks the doors beginning next Tuesday.
An announcement was made to employees last week that the mill will be closed Dec. 23 through Dec. 30, Jason Daniel, manger of public affairs for GP, said. The temporary shutdown is an unusual move for the mill but is precipitated by economic concerns.
Daniel said the current market situations have caused GP officials to make a decision to take a different approach with production at the plant.
Daniel said the end of any year is typically a slow time for business and the closing is well timed for everyone involved.
Late last month, Daniel had said the company would be watching trends and handling situations as they arise.
The Brewton Georgia-Pacific is expected to have all employees return to their regular shifts beginning Jan. 1, 2009.
