The Brewton area residents will have a chance to welcome 2009 when the 17th annual Blueberry Drop takes place in downtown on New Year's Eve.
The Blueberry Drop has become a tradition and is a fun way for residents to welcome the new year. Brewton Mayor Ted Jennings, who got the idea of having a Blueberry Drop from his daughter, thinks it has become a major part of Brewton.
Music for this year's event will be provided by The Real Deal and the celebration will begin at 9 p.m. with live entertainment.
The Blueberry Drop has been known as a family event from its inception. The Brewton Police Department means to keep it that way. Captain Randy Nicholson said they were not expecting any problems.
Jennings pointed out that the event was just a good safe way to welcome the new year.
Ruthie Cooper, who supervises D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital's Relay for Life team, said she and other employees of the hospital will be set up with plenty of goodies for sale.
The evening will end at midnight with the blueberry dropping at the message center, followed by fireworks. Music will continue throughout the event.
