Brewton area residents will have an opportunity to celebrate Martin Luther King Day with what has become an annual event. Joe Watson, chairman of the Alabama Democratic Conference's Brewton precinct, said the event is gearing up to be a special celebration on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. A special service commemorating Dr. King will be held Sunday, at Kingdom Ministry Church.
A new twist has been added to the events with cash prizes being awarded to winning floats participating in the parade, Watson said.
Watson said although entry deadline has passed, those who wish to participate in the parade will be able to make a last-minute registration.
Watson said lineup will be held behind the main offices of BankTrust in downtown Brewton.
The parade is set to begin at 1 p.m. The parade route will travel from the beginning location and proceed to U.S. 31 and go north to the Brewton City Park. The parade route will follow Sowell Road to Martin Luther King Avenue and travel to Sportsman Park, where the parade will disband.
Watson said the organization is also planning a picnic in the park following the parade.
A special service will be held beginning at 5 p.m. Jan. 18 at Kingdom Ministry church with Pastor Dean Culliver serving as guest speaker for the service.
Anyone interested in participating in the events may contact any celebration coordinator.
