Debbie Luttrell Gist, director of Performance Improvement at D.W. McMIllan Memorial Hospital, was the speaker at the Jan. 13, meeting of the Brewton Civic League.
Gist spoke about the experience of being the recipient of the Dement Hays Nursing Scholarship, and the importance it had in her life.
Gist applied for, and received the scholarship at a time when the funds made the difference between being a full-time student and having to work during her time in school.
The scholarship funds are available through the Brewton Civic League and the McMillan Trust.
Scholarship applications may be obtained from Melinda Happoldt, whose office is in the Neal Building on the Jefferson Davis Community College campus.
Applications may be submitted until March 2, 2009.
In other business, the League made the decision to continue selling the cookbook, Southern Touch, at a pre-Christmas price of $20.
The books were reprinted from the original of 25 years ago (1983), and are an exact duplication.
Proceeds from the sales go toward such Civic League projects as the nursing scholarships, the Community Benevolent Fund, Girl Scouts and Community Beautification projects.
The books made wonderful gifts and may be gotten from the Medical Center Pharmacy, The Treasure Chest, Jacki and Co., Southern Heirlooms or any Civic League member.
