Hearts, sweets and other goodies are usually only associated with Valentine's Day. However, several local Relay for Life teams are using the upcoming holiday as a chance to raise money to help in the search for a cure for cancer.
Covenant Hospice's Relay team will be hosting a Valentine's Bake Sale featuring home made cookies, fudge and other goodies to help raise money for their team. The sale will be held at the offices Feb. 12 and 13 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The office is located at 722 Douglas Ave.
A Relay team at the Escambia County Courthouse is also hoping Valentine's Day will help in their fund raising efforts. The group will be raffling a special Valentine's gift basket just in time for the holiday. For a chance at the basket, see any Relay team member in Room 115 in the basement of the courthouse.
The Jefferson Davis Community College Relay team is gearing up for the “Best Cake in Town” contest set for Feb. 27. The winner will receive a $100 cash prize if their cake is chosen to be the best. For additional information, contact Maurice Moore, team sponsor, at 809-1615.
Although some teams are gearing up with fund raising, Sharon Peacock, Relay committee team chair, said it's never too late to form a team.
Peacock said a goal of 25 teams is in place and teams still have plenty of time to form and participate.
Peacock said the number of members on a team is not important.
Brenda Kern, Relay committee sponsorship chair, said more options are available for those who want to become sponsors for the annual American Cancer Society event.
Kern said the Relay committee has agreed to have event programs printed and distributed during the April 4 Relay event.
Kern said the purpose of the program was to support advertisers who donate to the Relay event.
Teams will be raising funds for Relay for Life up through the close of the event. Sponsors will be making up-front contributions and pledges up until Relay day.
Kern said the presenting sponsor is in place, however, other sponsors are still needed,
