Machinery can be seen moving dirt in an area adjacent to the new Walmart location in preparation for new construction.
Brewton city building and planning coordinator Steve Yuhasz said the preparation is being done in anticipation of more than 30,000 sq. ft. of retail space.
Considering current economic conditions, residents in the area may be pleased to know that a popular discount retailer has made plans to become a part of the community.
In addition to the Dollar Tree location, three other occupants have already made commitments to occupy space along the strip, Yuhasz said.
Yuhasz said with current construction plans; the Murphy Oil retail location could be operational sometime this summer.
Yuhasz also said a 4,907 square foot facility will be constructed with one major occupant in mind.
Yuhasz said an additional construction will make six storefronts available for other retailers. “We are working to secure other retailers for those available spaces,” he said. “We are also actively pursuing and meeting with other businesses to fill additional out parcels at the site.”
Construction on the sites will begin once groundwork has been completed, Yuhasz said.
Walmart opened a Supercenter  in October 2008 and continues to be largest tax revenue generator for the city.
