After a “comeback” winning 13-1 record and reaching the semifinals of the class 3A state playoffs last fall, the T.R. Miller Tigers finished off an eight-day spring training period with their Red and White scrimmage game Tuesday night at Brewton Municipal Stadium.
Forty-five players suited up for the red team and 46 for the white. The white team defeated the red team 30-20.
T.R. Miller Tiger head football coach Jamie Riggs said his team’s week of spring training saw good and bad times.
While some of the week was disappointing, Riggs said the game was pretty good and competitive after watching the video.
Riggs said he was more so pleased with the game because it had been since Friday that the Tigers had practiced.
The spring training period saw 91 players on the roster in grades nine through 12.
The Tigers will lose 15 seniors from the 2008 season.
Defense:
As for defense, Riggs said his team is a little short in the secondary.
Riggs said the same thing is at linebacker.
Offense:
Riggs said the Tigers have more offensive lineman than they have had and that part is good.
While the running back position seems to have depth, Riggs said the receiver position seems to be lacking this spring.
Riggs said the first thing his coaches do after the spring is to evaluate.
Riggs said the advantage to do an early spring training is that you have the time, six or seven months, to get ready for the season.
As for the 2009 season schedule, all home games from 2008 will be away games and all away games will be home games except for the Central-Hayneville. Hayneville will come back to Brewton this year.
