Who knew that typical Brewton and East Brewton people would band together in such a way as to raise more than $50,000 for one single cause?
The 2009 Relay for Life event to benefit The American Cancer Society went above and beyond what had been hoped for by officials and coordinators of the event.
Being hopeful that this year’s event would be successful, coordinators upped the goal from the $34,000 in 2008 to $38,000 for 2009.
With the current economic conditions, there were doubters that didn’t expect the teams to get the wished for amount in the coffers.
For those team members, coordinators, committee members, sponsors who worked tirelessly throughout the year, the fact that more than $50,000 has been raised so far is a testiment to their tenacity and determination to fight for a cure for cancer.
With many of the team members and volunteers being among cancer survivors themselves, it’s no wonder that their hearts were thrown into raising money to help with research and other programs of the ACS.
Why else would a grown man with a beard don a baby blue, silk gown complete with feather boa and a wing put himself out where everyone can see him except to fight for a cure of a disease that has touched so many lives of our community’s residents?
We pay tribute to those who worked on teams or in an effort to coordinate activities for the Relay event. You will someday be part of the reason no one has to hear “you have cancer” ever again.
