Mrs. Dorothy Jean Pugh Rutherford, 80, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at a Pensacola, Fla., hospital. She was a native of Brewton and a resident of Pensacola, before moving to East Brewton 15 years ago. She was one of the first women HAM radio operators in Pensacola and Brewton, and was recognized for her work with MARS, or Military Affiliate Radio Station, supplying communications between U.S. soldiers and their families back home. She was of the Protestant faith and was co-owner of Ralph’s T.V. Service.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Ralph Rutherford of East Brewton; a son, Otis (Helga) Rutherford of Milton, Fla.; her brother, Wayne Pugh Sr. of Brewton; her grandchildren, Richard Rutherford and Edwin Marciniak; and a great-grandchild, Anne Marciniak.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 24, at 2 p.m. at Craver’s Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Fred Stallworth officiating. Burial followed at Fort Crawford Cemetery in East Brewton, with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were David Rutherford, Buddy Patterson, Wayne Pugh Jr., Chad Patterson, Casey Patterson and Richard Rutherford.
