Brewton 13-year-old BR loses heartbreaker

After falling into the losers bracket and fighting their way out to force a deciding game for the district championship, the Brewton 13-year-old Babe Ruth team dropped a heart breaker to Monroe County to lose 11-10 on Sunday in Evergreen.
Brewton, facing Monroe County for the third time in five games, gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lose by one run after going into the inning leading 10-8 and at one time, leading 8-0 after the first three innings.
Monroe County cut the lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Brewton claimed a 9-4 lead in the top of the fifth inning only to see Monroe County cut the lead to 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Brewton added one run in the top of the seventh inning to take a 10-8 lead, but Monroe County rallied to tie the game at 10-10 and score the game-winning run to win 11-10.
Brewton scored two runs in the first inning, four runs in the second inning and two more in the third inning to grab the eight-run lead after three.
Darby Black, Dylan Godwin, and Kieon Smith all pitched in the loss for the Brewton all stars with Smith getting the loss.
Black started the game and then reentered in relief for Godwin and went a total of 3 1/3 inning and allowed five runs on no hits, struck out one and walked seven.
Godwin went 2 1/3 inning and allowed four runs on five hits, walked two and struck out three,
Smith came in relief of Godwin in the bottom of the seventh inning with no outs and runners on first and second and went 1/3 of an inning and allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit.
Damion Williams was 1-for-3 in the loss at the plate and Godwin had one RBI.
Smith was 2-for-5 and Black was 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Dominique Jackson was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Jarred Salter was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Brandon Carmichael was 1-for-3 and Caden Lodge was 1-for-3 in the loss.
Friday night: Monroe County 6, Brewton 5
A late rally for the Brewton All Stars came up short Friday night in the first meeting against Monroe County as the Brewton team fell to 1-1 in the tournament in Evergreen after a 6-5 loss.
Brewton trailed 6-1 after the fifth inning but scored two runs in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 6-3 and two more in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 6-5, but that was as close as Brewton would get as they took the loss by one run.
Godwin took the loss on the mound for Brewton as he went the complete game and allowed six runs on five hits, walked two and struck out nine.
Brewton struck first in the game with one run on Godwin’s single, but Monroe tied the game with one run in the bottom of the second inning.
Monroe County then added two runs in the third and fourth inning and one run in the fifth to grab the 6-1 lead.
Godwin was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs in the loss for Brewton and Black was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Smith was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Lodge was 1-for-2.
Saturday game one: Brewton 19, Evergreen 10
In game one on Saturday for Brewton, Brewton defeated Evergreen 19-10 to advance to play Monroe County again.
Brewton used a six-run fifth inning and then added five more runs in the sixth inning to claim the nine-run win over host Evergreen.
Godwin had a triple in the win and Trey Salter added a double along with Jarred Salter.
Saturday game two: Brewton 12, Monroe County 8
After defeating Evergreen, Brewton met up with Monroe County for the second time and defeated Monroe County 12-8 to get their second win of the day and give Monroe County their first loss in the tournament and stay alive to play on Sunday.
Brewton scored four runs in the fourth inning, after two in the first and one in the second inning, to take a 7-3 and then scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a 12-3 lead.
Monroe County scored five runs in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 12-8, but Brewton held on for the four run win to play again on Sunday for the championship.
Damion Williams and Carmichael had singles in the win and Black and Jackson both had doubles to help key the Brewton win over Monroe County and force Sunday’s game.
Brewton’s 13-year-old All Star Babe Ruth team for the 2009 season were as followed:
Darby Black, Brandon Carmichael, Patrick Glass, Dylan Godwin, Ryann Gray, Dominique Jackson, Caden Lodge, Trey Salter, Dalton Smith, Kieon Smith, Damion Williams, and Jarred Salter.
Head coach was Frankie Godwin with assistant coach Doug Black and manager Ricky Salter.
Brewton’s 14-year-old all star tournament will be played in Brewton and begin on Thursday, July 2.
The tournament is now a two-team tournament as Atmore has dropped out.
Brewton will take on Monroe County at 6 p.m. July 2.
The format will now be the best two-of-three and games will be played on Firday, July 3 at 5:30 p.m.
A 7:30 p.m. game is set to be played in needed,
The 15-year-olds will begin play on Saturday, July 6 in Atmore against Atmore .at 7:30 p.m.
