Trying to find a way to describe the Brewton Little League 9-10 All-Star team’s departure from the Alabama State baseball tournament Tuesday evening was about like trying to put toothpaste back in the container: in a word, it was frustrating.
Battered by 22 hits, the Brewton squad was disposed from the tournament by a hot-hitting Roanoke team that eventually ended Brewton’s state tournament quest in four innings, thanks to a 21-1 win in the losers’ bracket.
It seemed early on that Brewton would stick close to the Roanoke team.
After Roanoke jumped out to a 2-0 lead in its first at-bat, Hunter Brittain took a 1-2 pitch with two outs and crushed a high fastball over the centerfield fence to draw within 2-1.
However, his hit would be one of only three Brewton could muster and Roanoke went on a 19-0 scoring tear from that point on.
They sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning, 10 in the third and 12 in the fourth, accumulating 20 hits in that span and scoring six, five and eight runs in those frames.
By contrast, Brewton got a first-inning single from Jordan Williams and a fourth-inning single by Joshua Winton as the only other two hits in the game. Only two men reached third beyond that.
