Every 42 seconds, a man is diagnosed with cancer. Every 46 seconds, a woman is diagnosed with cancer. Which means…every 22 seconds someone, somewhere hears the words “You have cancer.” Yes, we are living in some tough economic times, but that does not mean that people stop getting cancer.
That’s why the American Cancer Society would like to thank everyone who was able to participate in or support our 2009 Relay For Life events throughout Escambia County. The community’s generosity and hard work have really been amazing to see. The two Relay For Life events in Atmore and Brewton raised over $120,000 for the American Cancer Society’s research, education, advocacy and service programs. This outstanding show of support proves that the people of Escambia county are truly committed to the fight against cancer.
We were honored to be joined by an outstanding number of survivors who walked the opening Survivors Laps, officially kicking off this year’s events. These survivors are the reason we continue the fight. Their presence at the Relays show how far we are coming in the fight against cancer and continues to inspire hope in those currently battling cancer.
Another special thank you goes to the many Relay For Life volunteers who worked to make these events a success – celebrating the lives of those who have had cancer, remembering those lost, and fighting back against a disease that takes too much. Relay For Life would not be possible without these wonderful, selfless individuals.
The American Cancer Society also greatly appreciates the generosity of all our corporate sponsors. In a time when it may be difficult to give, we appreciate every little bit that can be donated to help end this disease.
