BLAST takes third|Anna Brown takes third High Point trophy

The Brewton Local Area Swim Team (BLAST Tiger sharks) recently participated in the Gulf Coast Area Aquatic League (GCAAL) End of Summer Championship swim meet in Fairhope and took third place.
The team participated in a 10-team meet with teams representing Monroeville, Jackson, Bay Minette, Foley, Gulf Shore, Fairhope, Daphne, Lake Forest Country Club, Rock Creek Country Club, and Brewton.
The Brewton team, coached by Angel Boyd, took third place in the recent championship meet from Division III.
Boyd said team members who participated in the meet were Mac Baxter, Peyton Baxter, Anna Brown, JaeDyn Crosby, Jackson Deatheridge, Elizabeth Glass, Olivia Guerra, Cole Jernigan, Colby Morris, Gage Parker, and Gunnar Parker.
Anna Brown swept the 12-year-old girls division, finishing first and medaling in all five of her events. Brown’s events included the 50-yard butterfly, 50-yard backstroke, and 100-yard individual medley, 100-yard freestyle, and 50-yard freestyle.
Brown was awarded High Point for her age group scoring 80 total individual points for the team and 17 points higher than any other 12-year-old girl who participated.
Brown also qualified for Southeastern Championships this past March as part of USA Swimming.
Colby Morris finished fifth overall in the 8-year-old boys division scoring 39 points for the team and medaling in the 25-yard butterfly placing second and the 100-yard individual medley where he placed fourth.
Morris also finished seventh in the 25-yard freestyle, ninth in the 25-yard breaststroke, and ninth in the 50-yard butterfly.
Mac Baxter finished seventh overall in the six and under boys division with 19 individual points earned for the team. Boyd, who calls Baxter “Mac Attack,” says that he really swam up to level of his competition.
Gage Parker finished 10th overall in the 8-year-old boys divisions. Parker had 22 individual points for BLAST.
Other Tiger Sharks placing at the Championship included 10-year-old Peyton Baxter.
Baxter placed 14th in the 50-yard freestyle and placed in the 25-yard backstroke and fly respectively.
Cole Jernigan, seven, won his heat in the 25-yard butterfly, placed 16th in the 50-freestyle, 16th in the 25-yard backstroke and was also the member of the fifth place, eight and under boys freestyle and medley relay teams who won their heat as well.
JaeDyn Crosby, also seven, swam well and placed in the backstroke and free-style events and earned valuable team points.
Elizabeth Glass, age 8, won her heat in the 25-yard backstroke and placed in the distance freestyle, breaststroke and 25-yard free events and earned points for the team
Gunnar Parker, age 4, swam in the six-and-under 25-yard backstroke and 25-yard freestyle and placed in both events.
Jackson Deatheridge, 11-years-old, placed in the freestyle and backstroke events.
Olivia Guerra, age 9, swam in her first big event and placed in the freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly events.
Members of the Tiger Sharks who were unable to participate in the Championships due to scheduling conflicts were: Laura Moore, Tucker Davenport, Allie Nelson, Breann Huff, Shelby Youngblood, Katie Nelson, Micah Martin, Noah Winton, Nolan Atkinson, Geoffrey Youngblood, Brandon Nelson, and Kierstyn Elder.
The Brewton BLAST Fall/Winter season will begin Aug. 10.
Practices are held at the Brewton Area YMCA.
