A group of young local leaders is within about $1,500 of collecting enough money to purchase an outdoor movie theater for the community’s use.
The 2008-2009 Leadership Brewton class, sponsored by the Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce, has been raising funds from local businesses and individuals for an outdoor movie projector and screen. The group is close to raising $15,000, said Jason Daniel, a class member and manager of public affairs at Georgia-Pacific.
If the class can raise $15,000, an anonymous donor has pledged the additional $5,000 it will take to purchase the equipment.
Daniel said the outdoor theater would be another tool in the quality of life improvements the city has been making to its parks and other recreation facilities.
The city is overhauling City Park in downtown Brewton — the site of a corporate-sponsored outdoor movie two years ago — and making improvements to Burnt Corn Creek Park, where a skate park is going up this week, and adding a splash fountain to Dogwood Hills.
Daniel said he envisions the outdoor movie equipment being used about four times a year.
Anyone interested in donating to the project can call the chamber of commerce office at 867-3224.
