On the first night of the 2009 football season last Thursday night in Monroe-ville, the W.S. Neal Eagle football team picked up their first victory of the season with a 24-10 win over the Monroe County High School Tigers.
Jeremy Nicholson rushed for 242 yards and two touchdowns and had 328 all-purpose yards with an 86-yard kickoff return to help aid W.S. Neal in the 14-point win.
The Eagle offense racked up 395 total yards of offense, with 351 coming on the ground and 44 in the air. The Eagles also had 19 total first downs.
This week brings a much different task for the Eagles. For the second straight week, they hit the road, this week traveling to Grove Hill to take on the Clarke County Bulldogs in the first region game of the season.
Clarke County dropped to 0-1 last week as they dropped a defensive struggle to Leroy High School 7-4.
Last year, Barnett toasted the Eagles for 303 yards of offense out of the total 416 yards the Bulldogs had and four touchdowns in a 49-12 win last season in East Brewton.
Jordan also noted the quarterback play of senior No. 2, Daniel Bedwell.
Defensively for the Bulldogs, Jordan said they really get after you.
Eagle defensive coordinator Coy Campbell said he was proud of his team’s play in the win Thursday, but they need to keep improving and will face a big test this week.
Campbell also noted the change in offense for the Bulldogs.
Campbell said his defense is still not doing a good job of tackling.
Jordan said that getting that first region win is a good thing to get.
