Mr. Lawrence Owen Smith Sr., 90, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, in a Pensacola medical facility after a brief illness. He was a native of Wallace, and a long time resident of Brewton. He was a member of the North Brewton Baptist Church since 1959. He was a U.S. Army combat veteran of World War II, and a recipient of the Purple Heart while crossing northern France with General Patton’s 3rd Army,. He was wounded in action near Metz, France, on Nov. 15, 1944. He was an employee of Barber’s Milk Company in Brewton for over 25 years.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ethel Lee Morris Smith of Brewton; a son, Lawrence “Jerry” O. Smith Jr. of Brewton; a daughter, Marguerite Smith (Billy) Shell of Brewton; three grandchildren, Judson Shell of Brewton, Dawn Shell (Corwin) Matwichuk of Seattle, Wash., and Dana Shell (Jimmy) Johnson of Birmingham; and three great-grandchildren, Owen Johnson, Cole Matwichuk and Luke Matwichuk.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at North Brewton Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. at North Brewton Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael King and the Rev. John D. MacLaren officiating. Burial will follow at Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.
