The T.R. Miller Tigers picked up a big defensive win Friday night in Daphne as they held on to defeat Bayside Academy 28-24.
The win improved T.R. Miller to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in region play, while Bayside fell to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in region play.
On a fourth-and-goal from the Tiger 9-yard line and eight seconds left in the game, T.R. Miller Tiger Terez Lane picked off an Admiral pass and ran it out of the end zone and the final seconds off the clock to seal the win. “I was trying to do it for my team,” Terez Lane said. “We needed the win and we had to stop them on the goal line and we did that. I just can’t say nothing about it, I am speechless.”
Bayside, who took over on their own 9-yard line with 6:49 used a fake punt on a fourth-and-six to move the ball to their 41-yard line.
From there, they used a 10-play drive to set up shop at the Tiger 5-yard line.
A sack on first down and a no gain on second down forced a third down spike to set up the fourth down.
The fourth down pass resulted in an interception and the Tigers stayed undefeated in the win.
Bayside had 332 total yards of offense with 157 coming on the ground on 61 carries and 175 in the air. T.R. Miller had 268 yards of offense with 161 on the ground and 107 in the air, 74 on the second play from scrimmage.
As for what he thought when the ball was in the air on the fourth down try?
Tiger coach Jamie Riggs said his team knew that Bayside was very much like they were last year, and that proved to be true.
Riggs said his team did a better job down there in the fourth quarter with some things and had he not made the poor call on the fake punt, it would have been better.
Riggs said that the final plays of the game were big from his defense.
While the win was a close one against Bayside, Riggs said this win would be good for his team.
