Life Boat event to help those laid off

The Evergreen/Conecuh County Chamber of Commerce will host “Operation Life Boat” Sept. 22 in the Edith A. Gray Library on the campus of Reid State Technical College in Evergreen.
Representatives from several organizations will be in attendance at this free event to provide information for those who have lost their jobs or anyone who is seeking information to help their families cope with the current economic situation.
The event begins at 6 p.m.
This area is experiencing high unemployment, with the latest unemployment figures for Alabama indicating that Conecuh County had a 19.4 percent unemployment rate for the month of July. Surrounding counties of Butler, Covington, Escambia, and Monroe had rates of 16.6 percent, 9.9 percent, 13.1 percent and 18.2 percent, respectively for the month of July.
