Dogs, cats and a variety of other pets are looking for homes in Escambia County. But Renee Jones, director of the Humane Society of Escambia County, said adoptions of pets from the Brewton and Atmore shelters have seen a drastic drop in recent weeks.
In an effort to increase the probability of adoption, the HSEC has partnered with a Web site aimed at sheltered pet adoptions.
Jones said to see pets currently being sheltered in Brewton log on to the Internet at www.petango.com/humanesocietybrewton. For a listing of pets available for adoption in Atmore log on to the Internet at www.pentango.com/humanesocietyatmore.
The need to publicize available pets for adoption is necessary since adoptions are seeing a decrease over the past few months, Jones said.
Jones said more than 200 animals are up for adoption at any time in the county.
Statistics show that the No. 1 cause of death to companion animals is euthanasia in a shelter setting, she said.
Jones said although there are many pets available at the shelter, the number of animals coming into the shelter has also seen a drop.
Kennel hours for the Brewton and Atmore shelters are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. Adoption fees for dogs and puppies are $100 and includes all up-to-date immunizations, microchip implantation, spay/neuter and rabies vaccination as well as heartworm testing for adults. Adoption fees for cats are $75 and include microchip implantation, immunizations, rabies vaccination and leukemia testing. For information call 867-6860.
