First the good news: The intake of animals at the Humane Society of Escambia County shelter is down.
The bad news? Adoptions are also down, by about 40 percent. Humane Society officials know the economy probably has something to do with that, as many people are working to put food on the table and may not be able to afford a dog or cat dish as well.
But the Humane Society has joined a new Web site to help get adoptable animals on the Internet so they can be seen not only locally but across the region and the country.
The Web site, located at www.petangocom/humanesocietybrewton, showcases the listing of all pets available in Brewton. The Web site www.petango.com/humanesocietyatmore shows the pets available for adoption in Atmore.
While we hope that people who cannot afford an animal right now will not try to adopt a pet, anyone who does have the love and resources to care for a dog or cat will find someone to love at either the Brewton or Atmore shelter.
In the meantime, the number of adoptable animals at the shelters is a reminder that we should all have our pets spayed or neutered so that unwanted animals do not become an even greater problem.
We are grateful to the Humane Society for continuing to care for pets and for trying to find them loving homes.
