Escambia County Sheriff’s Department officials do not expect any charges to be filed against a Brewton man who shot and killed a masked intruder in his home early Monday morning.
Jeremy Paul McCall, 33, of Atmore, had been out of jail for less than 48 hours when he apparently broke into a home on U.S. 31 North shortly before 3 a.m., burst in a bedroom and pointed a gun at a couple as they lay in bed.
The 81-year-old homeowner told authorities he grabbed a gun and fired one shot at McCall. When deputies arrived, they found McCall lying unresponsive on the floor.
Sheriff Grover Smith said Tuesday that authorities are also seeking an “accomplice” in the break-in who apparently drove McCall to the house. An arrest warrant has been issued, but Smith did not name the suspect.
McCall had been in jail in Nebraska on a failure to appear charge, and there were other charges pending in Brewton, Lambert said.
No charges have been filed against the couple, whom police declined to identify.
Lambert said the couple was coping in the aftermath of the incident.
