School board has low bid for school

The Brewton City Board of Education is close to choosing a contractor for the construction of a new middle school.
The school board had hoped officially to pick the contractor at its Monday meeting, but Smith said some details still need to be worked out with the low bidder.
The school board will likely meet in a called meeting in coming days to approve the contractor, Smith said.
The city school board has been planning to build the new middle school for several years and finally picked a site in 2008 on about 100 acres at the corner of U.S. 31 and Old Castleberry Road.
The school board purchased the property from the city and has set aside a $20 million bond issue for the construction of the new middle school.
With little school construction ongoing, interest in the project from contractors was high.
Smith has said he hopes the new school would be open by fall 2011.
