Thursday night’s season opener for the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk basketball team was not the way coach Allen Gainer would have liked to start the season off.
The Warhawks traveled to Marion Military and fell to 0-1 with a tough 92-89 loss.
But that was not the real story of the game.
JDCC trailed 49-44 at half time as Marion started the game with a 7-2 run and got up as much as 44-34.
In the second half, JDCC outscored MMI 45-43 and took leads of 70-67 and 83-81, but could not hold on.
Logan Campbell led the Warhawks with 24 points followed by 23 from Justin Burroughs.
Kentrail Brown had 16 points and Damien Jackson had 11.
Marquis Williams and Jamey Goddin had six each.
Brandon McCloud had three.
Campbell had 11 rebounds in the loss and Burrough had one block along with Brown and McCloud.
Williams had nine assists and six steals.
JDCC shot 14 percent from 3-point range (4-for-28) and was 23-for-30 (77 percent) from the free throw line while shooting 39 percent from the field.
MMI shot 50 percent from the field and was 65 percent from the free throw line.
JDCC will play their first home game of the season Thursday night at 7 p.m. against Pensacola Christian College.
